Pan Head Screws Manufacturer in India

The everyday machine screw head. We make cross recessed pan head screws to ISO 7045 (the former DIN 7985), slotted pan heads to ISO 1580 and inch pan heads to ASME B18.6.3, in A2 and A4 stainless, brass and steel. The page gives every head dimension in metric and inch, compares the heads, and finds the driver, tap drill and clearance hole for each size.

Overview

Cross Recessed Pan Head Screws & Slotted Pan Head Machine Screws: Manufacturer & Distributor

The pan head is the general-purpose machine screw head: wide enough to clamp well, low enough to stay tidy, with room for a deep cross recess so it drives quickly and does not cam out easily.

Exotic Alloy manufactures pan head screws in Mumbai, India, for electronics, electrical, appliance, instrument and machinery makers. We stock across India and supply Poland, Europe, the Gulf and Africa. Heads are cold formed with the recess or slot in one blow, and threads are rolled.

Metric and inch

Metric pan heads follow ISO 7045 (cross recessed, which replaced DIN 7985), ISO 1580 (slotted, formerly DIN 85) and ISO 14583 (hexalobular). Inch pan heads follow ASME B18.6.3, with a taller head for the Phillips version. For a lower dome with a hex socket see button head screws.

Slotted vs Cross Recessed Pan Heads, Metric & Inch

Cross recessed pan heads are taller than slotted ones, because the recess needs depth. Here are the M5 and No. 10 heads side by side, with a button head for comparison.

Drives

Phillips, Pozidriv, Slotted or Hexalobular?

DriveStandardBitChoose it for
Phillips (type H)ISO 7045 H, ASME type IPHThe most common recess; fast with power drivers
Pozidriv (type Z)ISO 7045 ZPZLess cam-out than Phillips; common in Europe
SlottedISO 1580, ASME slottedFlat bladeAny screwdriver; easy to clean; lower head
HexalobularISO 14583Six-lobeHighest drive torque, least cam-out

Use the bit type that matches the recess: a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv recess (or the reverse) fits loosely and damages both.

Holes

Tap Drills, Clearance Holes & Bearing Area

For metric coarse threads the usual tap drill is the thread size minus the pitch (4.2 mm for M5). The clearance hole in the top part follows ISO 273; the medium series (5.5 mm for M5) suits most assemblies.

The ring of head left around the clearance hole is the bearing area that carries the clamp load. A wider head or a washer spreads the load further, which helps in plastics, aluminium and thin sheet.

FAQ

Pan Head Screw Questions, Answered

A pan head screw has a wide, fairly low head with almost straight sides, a slightly domed top and a flat bearing face. It is the most common general-purpose machine screw head. Metric pan heads are made to ISO 7045 (cross recessed) and ISO 1580 (slotted); inch pan heads to ASME B18.6.3.

DIN 7985 was withdrawn and replaced by ISO 7045. The head diameter and height are the same in both, for example 10 mm across and 3.8 mm high for M5; only the reference cross recess depth m differs slightly (5.3 mm in DIN 7985 against 4.9 mm in ISO 7045 for M5, type H). The screws are interchangeable.

A cross recess needs more depth than a slot, so cross recessed pan heads are made taller. For M5, ISO 1580 slotted is 3 mm high and ISO 7045 cross recessed 3.8 mm; for inch No. 10, the ASME slotted pan head is up to 0.110 in high and the Phillips pan head up to 0.133 in, both 0.373 in across.

For ISO 7045: recess size 0 for M1.6 and M2, 1 for M2.5 and M3, 2 for M3.5 to M5, 3 for M6 and 4 for M8 and M10. Use a Phillips (PH) bit for type H recesses and a Pozidriv (PZ) bit for type Z. For inch Phillips pan heads, No. 10 takes a PH 2 driver.

A pan head has straighter sides and a flatter top and is usually driven by a cross recess or slot; a button head (ISO 7380) is a lower dome with a hex socket. For M5, the ISO 7045 pan head is 10 mm across and 3.8 mm high, the ISO 7380 button head 9.5 mm across and 2.75 mm high.

For metric coarse threads the usual tap drill is the thread size minus the pitch: 2.5 mm for M3, 3.3 mm for M4, 4.2 mm for M5, 5 mm for M6 and 6.8 mm for M8. ISO 273 medium clearance holes are 3.4, 4.5, 5.5, 6.6 and 9 mm for the same sizes.

From the flat underside of the head to the end of the screw; the head is not included. An M5 × 12 pan head screw is 12 mm under the head and about 15.8 mm overall.

Most often A2 (304) and A4 (316) stainless steel, like the screws in our photo, steel in property class 4.8, zinc plated or black, and brass. Use A4 near the sea and in food, pharmaceutical and chemical equipment.
