Overview

DIN 316 & ASME Wing Screws (Butterfly Screws): Manufacturer & Stockist

A butterfly screw has two flat wings instead of a drive. Finger and thumb turn it, so covers, guards, clamps and fixtures can be opened and closed again and again without looking for a tool.

Exotic Alloy manufactures butterfly screws in Mumbai, India, and keeps common sizes in stock for machine builders, furniture and display makers, and maintenance teams. We supply across India and export to Tanzania, East Africa, the Gulf and Europe.

Made for hand tightening

The wings give a long lever for the fingers, but they are not meant for spanners or pliers. Where a joint needs real preload, use a hex cap screw; for a smaller knob see knurled head screws and thumb screws.

Wing Screws & Wing Nuts Share One Head

A DIN 316 screw is, in effect, a DIN 315 wing nut on a shank: span e, boss d2, boss height m and wing thickness g are identical. The edged DIN 318 screw matches the DIN 314 wing nut in the same way.

So a design can use a wing screw on one side and a wing nut on a stud elsewhere and both need the same swing room. Wing nuts are on our nuts page.

The wings sweep a circle as wide as the span, and two fingers at the tips make a couple T = F × e.
  • Room to turn: keep walls and flanges at least half the span from the axis, plus room for fingers.
  • Finger tight: a wider span gives more torque for the same finger force.
  • No tools: pliers and spanners bend the wings.
  • Washer: a plain washer under the boss protects painted or soft parts.

Screw & space

Our calculation. Swing diameter = maximum span. Finger force: two fingers pushing the wing tips as a couple, F = T / e (mean span). Clamp force: rule of thumb F = T / (0.2 d). Thread stress = clamp / stress area As (ISO 898-1, ASME B1.1), shown against the 240 MPa yield of steel class 4.6 for reference. The wings, not the thread, usually limit hand torque; we do not publish a wing strength rating.

FAQ

Butterfly Screw Questions, Answered

A butterfly screw, or wing screw, is a screw with two flat wings on its head so it can be turned by hand, without a tool. Metric wing screws are standardised in DIN 316 with rounded wings (M4 to M24) and DIN 318 with edged wings (M4 to M12); inch wing screws in ASME B18.6.8, Types A to D.

The wing shape. DIN 316 has rounded wings and shares its head sizes with the DIN 315 wing nut; DIN 318 has edged, straight-cut wings and shares its head sizes with the DIN 314 wing nut. For M6 the span is 30 to 33 mm in DIN 316 and 29 to 32 mm in DIN 318.

From the bearing face under the boss to the end of the screw; the wings are not included. Under the head DIN 316 allows an unthreaded length of up to 2.1 mm for M4, rising to 9 mm for M24.

They describe how the screw is made and the wing form in ASME B18.6.8: Type A is cold forged with light, regular and heavy wings, Type B has round-nose wings (style 2 with a high head), Type C style 1 is die cast in zinc alloy and Type D is stamped from steel sheet.

By hand only. The torque is the finger force at the wing tips times the span: two fingers pushing with 27 N each on an M8 DIN 316 screw, span about 37.5 mm, give about 1 N m. Do not use pliers or a spanner, which bend the wings; if the joint needs more clamp, use a hex head screw.

A full circle as wide as the wing span, plus room for the fingers. For an M8 DIN 316 screw the span is up to 39 mm, so anything closer than 19.5 mm to the screw axis stops the wings turning.

Yes. A DIN 316 screw has the wing span, boss and wing thickness of the DIN 315 wing nut, and a DIN 318 screw those of the DIN 314 nut, so a wing screw and a wing nut of the same thread look alike and need the same room to turn.

DIN 316 allows malleable cast iron, steel (forged or cold worked), brass and austenitic stainless steel. We make wing screws in zinc-plated steel, brass and A2 or A4 stainless; the screw in our photo is stainless.
