Overview

Fillister Machine Screws (ASME B18.6.3): Manufacturer & Distributor

A fillister head is small across and tall: cylindrical sides, a slightly domed top and a deep slot or recess. It drops into counterbores and tight spaces where a pan head will not fit.

Exotic Alloy manufactures fillister head screws in Mumbai, India, for instrument, electrical, machinery and equipment builders. We stock across India and supply Colombia, Latin America, North America, the Gulf and Europe. Heads are cold headed and threads are rolled to UNC and UNF.

Three versions

The slotted head (ASME B18.6.3 Table 21), the Phillips head with the same head dimensions (recess per Table 22), and the slotted drilled head with a cross hole for lock wire (Table 23). The metric relative is the cheese head screw.

Dashed = wire inside the cross hole; green arrows = turning effect of the wire tension. EXOTIC ALLOY
A cross hole through the head takes lock (safety) wire. The wire is routed so that its pull turns each screw clockwise, the tightening direction, so the screws cannot back off.

Where vibration could loosen a screw and a loose screw would be dangerous or costly, drilled fillister heads are tied together with stainless lock wire, or sealed with wire and a lead or plastic seal against tampering.

The holes are standard drill sizes, from 0.031″ (#68) on No. 2 to 0.070″ (#50) on 3/8″. Choose a wire that passes freely through the hole, and follow your industry’s wiring practice.

Fillister vs Metric Cheese Head (ISO 1207)

Converting a design between inch and metric? The nearest metric head is the ISO 1207 cheese head. It has a flat top and is lower, so a counterbore sized for one is not always right for the other. The threads differ, so the screws are never interchangeable.

Pick the size, set the clearance and extra depth, and get the counterbore, tap drill and head data in inch and mm.

Screw & counterbore

Our rule of thumb: counterbore diameter = A max + 2 × clearance; depth for a fully sunk head = O max + extra depth; with only the cylindrical side sunk (dome proud) = H max + extra depth. Head data from ASME B18.6.3 Table 21 (drilled heads Table 23); tap drills give about 75 % thread. Check against your own design rules.

FAQ

Fillister Head Screw Questions, Answered

A machine screw with a small-diameter, tall head: cylindrical sides and a slightly domed top. Under ASME B18.6.3 a No. 10 fillister head is 0.292 to 0.313 in across and 0.156 to 0.180 in high overall, against 0.357 to 0.373 in across for a No. 10 pan head.

Same idea in two systems. The fillister is the inch head of ASME B18.6.3, with a domed top; the cheese head is the metric ISO 1207 head (formerly DIN 84) with a flat top. A No. 10 fillister head is 0.313 in (7.95 mm) across and 0.180 in (4.57 mm) high; an M5 cheese head is 8.5 mm across and 3.3 mm high.

The tall head carries a deep slot, up to 0.083 in on a No. 10 against 0.068 in on a No. 10 pan head, which gives the screwdriver a good grip, and its small diameter fits counterbores and narrow spaces.

A slotted fillister head with a small cross hole through the head for lock (safety) wire. ASME B18.6.3 Table 23 lists them from No. 2 to 3/8 in; on a No. 10 the hole is 0.046 in (a No. 56 drill), drilled roughly at right angles to the slot. The wire is routed so its tension turns each screw in the tightening direction.

No. 0 for No. 0 screws, No. 1 for No. 2 to No. 4, No. 2 for No. 5 to No. 10, No. 3 for No. 12 and 1/4 in, and No. 4 for 3/8 in. Cross recessed fillister heads have the same head dimensions as slotted ones.

From under the head to the end of the screw. The head is not included, unlike a flat countersunk head, which is measured overall.

Our rule of thumb is the maximum head diameter plus a clearance each side, and the maximum total head height plus a little extra depth for a flush or sunk head. For a No. 10 with 0.016 in clearance per side that is 0.345 in (8.8 mm) across and at least 0.180 in deep. The calculator on this page works it out for every size.

18-8 (304) and 316 stainless steel; low-carbon steel, plain, zinc plated or black oxide; and brass. Unless otherwise specified, ASME B18.6.3 steel machine screws are low-carbon steel such as 1006 to 1022, Rockwell B69 to B100.
