Overview

ASTM A325 Heavy Hex Bolts & ASME B18.2.1 Heavy Hex Screws: Manufacturer & Supplier

A heavy hex bolt is a hex bolt with a bigger head. The width across flats is 1½ times the diameter plus ⅛″ instead of 1½ times the diameter, so the head bears on more of the joint and the spanner has more metal to grip. It is the standard bolt for flanged joints, pressure equipment and structural steel.

Exotic Alloy manufactures heavy hex bolts and heavy hex screws to ASME B18.2.1 and B18.2.3.6M, and heavy hex structural bolts to ASME B18.2.6 in ASTM F3125 Grades A325, A490, A325M and A490M, at our works in Mumbai, India. Every size is hot forged, thread rolled and supplied with the matching heavy hex nut and hardened washer. We supply India and export to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Europe and the Americas.

Types & standards

Types of Heavy Hex Bolts We Manufacture

Three inch patterns share the same heavy hex head but differ under the head, in head height and in thread length, and they are specified by different ASTM grades. Metric heavy hex bolts follow ASME or the European HR / HV systems.

Heavy Hex Bolts

ASME B18.2.1 · ASTM A307 B · A193 B7 / B8 / B8M · A320 L7

Plain underhead, the taller heavy hex bolt head and the 2D + ¼″ thread length. The machine bolt for ASME B16.5 flanges, valves, pumps and pressure equipment where the joint is tightened against a gasket. Normally supplied with A194 2H, 8 / 8M or A563 B heavy hex nuts.

Heavy Hex Screws

ASME B18.2.1 · SAE J429 · A193 B7 · A449

Washer face under the head, the cap-screw head height and closer head and body tolerances than the bolt. Chosen for machined assemblies, equipment bases and wherever the bolt turns against a finished surface. Same across-flats and thread length as the heavy hex bolt.

Heavy Hex Structural Bolts

ASME B18.2.6 · ASTM F3125 A325 / A490 · Types 1 and 3

½″ to 1½″ with a short thread (1.00″ to 2.25″) so that threads stay out of the shear plane, and supplied as a bolt, A563 DH nut and F436 washer assembly. Installed snug-tight or pretensioned to 70 % of tensile under the RCSC Specification; Type 3 is weathering steel for unpainted bridges and towers.

Metric Heavy Hex Bolts & Screws

ASME B18.2.3.6M / B18.2.3.3M · F3125 A325M / A490M · ISO 898-1 8.8 / 10.9

M12 to M36 with the ASME heavy series across flats (M20 = 34 mm, M24 = 41 mm). A325M and A490M structural bolts are the metric equivalents of A325 and A490, marked 8S and 10S, and are pretensioned to the same 70 % rule in kN.

EN 14399 HR & HV Structural Assemblies

EN 14399-3 (HR, 8.8 / 10.9) · EN 14399-4 (HV, 10.9) · EN 1090-2 · DIN 6914

The European preloaded assemblies with large widths across flats (M20 = 32 mm, M24 = 41 mm, M36 = 60 mm), CE-marked as bolt, nut and washer sets with a declared k-class for torque or combined tightening. HV sets use a thinner 10 nut and a shorter thread; HR sets a full-height nut.

Corrosion-Resistant & Exotic Alloy Heavy Hex Bolts

A193 B8 / B8M · ISO 3506 A4-80 · ASTM F468 · duplex, Inconel, Monel

The same heavy hex pattern forged in 304 / 316, duplex 2205 / 2507, Inconel 625 / 718, Monel 400 / K-500 and Hastelloy C-276 for seawater, sour gas and chemical flanges, with heavy hex nuts in the same alloy and anti-seize to prevent galling.

Why the two patterns differ. On a flange the bolt clamps a gasket, so bearing area and a controlled, moderate preload matter: a heavy hex bolt with a long thread and an A194 2H nut. In a structural joint the bolt carries shear across the plies, so the thread is short and the bolt is pretensioned hard: an A325 / A490 structural bolt with a DH nut and F436 washer.
Grades & mechanical properties

Heavy Hex Bolt Grades: A325, A490, A193 B7 & Head Markings

The heavy hex head is a shape; the grade is the material specification stamped on it. Structural joints use ASTM F3125, pressure joints use ASTM A193 / A320 or A307 Grade B.

Heavy hex bolt head markings: A325, A325 underlined for Type 3, A490, 8S for A325M, 10S for A490M, B7 for ASTM A193 A325XYZF3125 A325 Type 1 A325XYZA325 Type 3 weathering A490XYZF3125 A490 Type 1 8SXYZA325M (metric) 10SXYZA490M (metric) B7XYZASTM A193 B7
XYZ is the manufacturer's identification. F3125 requires the grade on every bolt and a lot number traceable to the test report; Type 3 weathering bolts carry the grade underlined. Nuts are marked DH, 2H, 8M and so on, and F436 washers carry the manufacturer's mark.

F3125 (2015 onward) consolidated A325, A490, A325M, A490M, F1852 and F2280 into one specification and set A325 at 120 ksi for every diameter, dropping the earlier 105 ksi tier above 1″. Hardness ranges apply to the finished bolt. A490 has a maximum tensile strength because higher hardness raises the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, which is also why it must not be galvanised or reused.

Manufacturing

How Our Heavy Hex Bolts Are Made

The heavy head needs more metal gathered under the die than a standard hex, so from ¾″ upward the head is hot forged. Structural grades are heat treated as full bolts and tested by the lot.

1

Certified bar & heat lot control

Bar received by heat against mill certificates; each production lot is one heat, one diameter, one heat-treatment batch, as F3125 requires. PMI on stainless and nickel alloys.

2

Hot forging of the heavy head

Induction-heated bar is upset in a two-blow forging press that gathers the extra volume of the 1½D + ⅛″ head and forms the underhead fillet without folding, keeping grain flow continuous into the head.

3

Trimming, facing & pointing

Hexagon trimmed to the across-flats limits, washer face turned on heavy hex screws, point chamfered. Sizes above 1½″ and short runs are CNC machined from hexagon or round bar.

4

Heat treatment

Quench and temper to the hardness window of the grade: 25 to 34 HRC for A325, 33 to 38 HRC for A490, 35 HRC max for B7, with a minimum tempering temperature of 427 °C (800 °F) for A325 and A490 and 593 °C (1100 °F) for B7. Solution annealing for stainless; ageing for K-500 and 718.

5

Thread rolling

Threads rolled after heat treatment on B7, L7 and 10.9 for the best fatigue life, and before heat treatment on structural grades where the standard allows. UNC class 2A or metric 6g, checked with go / no-go gauges.

6

Finish & assembly

Hot-dip or mechanical galvanising, zinc flake, PTFE or passivation; galvanised nuts overtapped and lubricated; bolt, nut and washer assembled by lot and rotational-capacity tested.

7

Lot testing & certification

Hardness, full-size wedge tensile, proof load and dimensional checks on every lot; Charpy, PMI and NDT where specified; EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates with lot numbers that match the head markings.

Wedge tensile test: the bolt head is pulled against a wedge of 4 to 10 degrees so that head and shank must fail in the thread, not under the head Full-size wedge tensile test (ASTM F606) hardened wedge, 4° to 10° pull to fracture pass: fracture in the thread or shank, not at the head

Why structural heavy hex bolts are wedge tested, not just pulled

F3125 and A193 require the tensile test on the full-size bolt with a wedge under the head. The wedge loads the head off-axis, so a bolt with a sharp underhead fillet, a cold shut in the forging, decarburised threads or an over-hard head fails at the head instead of in the thread. A heavy hex head forged with a proper fillet and tempered to the grade's hardness window passes; a machined head with no fillet often does not. We wedge-test every F3125 and B7 lot and keep the fractured specimens with the lot record.

Galvanised A325 assemblies additionally pass the rotational-capacity test: bolt, nut and washer are turned to twice the installation rotation and must reach the required tension without stripping, seizing or shearing.

Coatings & finishes

Heavy Hex Bolt Coatings & Galvanising Rules by Grade

With heavy hex bolts the coating choice is governed by the grade as much as by the environment: the high-strength grades restrict what may be done to them. See also our coated fasteners page.

Galvanised structural assemblies are a matched set. ASTM F3125 and the RCSC Specification require galvanised A325 bolts to be shipped with the overtapped, lubricated DH nuts and washers they were rotational-capacity tested with, in the same lot container. Mixing bolts and nuts from different suppliers voids the test, and un-lubricated galvanised nuts gall before the bolt reaches pretension. We ship every galvanised A325 lot as a tested assembly with the test report.
Installation

Heavy Hex Bolt Pretension, Turn-of-Nut & Torque

Structural heavy hex bolts are specified by tension, not torque. The RCSC Specification sets the minimum pretension at 70 % of the bolt's minimum tensile strength and accepts four ways to get there: turn-of-nut, calibrated wrench, twist-off tension-control bolt and direct tension indicator. Torque figures are a by-product that depends on lubrication; use them for planning the tooling, not as the acceptance criterion.

Pretension & turn-of-nut tool

in

Minimum pretension = 0.70 × minimum tensile strength × stress area (RCSC / EN 1090-2). Turn-of-nut from the snug-tight condition for both faces normal to the bolt axis: ⅓ turn for L ≤ 4D, ½ turn for 4D < L ≤ 8D, ⅔ turn for 8D < L ≤ 12D. Indicative torque T = K · F · d.

Turn-of-nut: match marks on nut and bolt end at snug-tight, then the nut is turned one third, one half or two thirds of a turn ⅓ turn (120°) ½ turn (180°) ⅔ turn (240°) match mark at snug-tight

The four RCSC pretensioning methods

  • Turn-of-nut. Snug the joint, mark nut and bolt end, then turn the nut the specified fraction of a turn. Independent of lubrication, which is why it is the reference method.
  • Calibrated wrench. Torque wrench set daily on a tension calibrator to 5 % above the required pretension with the actual assembly; valid only for that lot and lubricant.
  • Twist-off tension-control bolt. F3125 Grade F1852 (A325 strength) or F2280 (A490 strength) with a splined end that shears at the set tension; round head, not heavy hex, and installed with a shear wrench.
  • Direct tension indicator. ASTM F959 washer with bumps that flatten at pretension; checked with a feeler gauge. Works with any heavy hex bolt grade we supply.

Pretension values are 0.70 × minimum tensile strength × UNC stress area, as tabulated in the RCSC Specification and AISC 360 Table J3.1. Rotation is from snug-tight with both outer faces normal to the bolt axis; a sloped face without a bevel washer adds ⅞ turn per face. The RCSC edition in force sets the rotation tolerance.

FAQ

Heavy Hex Bolt Questions, Answered

The head. A heavy hex head is 1/8 inch wider across the flats than a standard hex head of the same diameter (1-1/2 D + 1/8 instead of 1-1/2 D) and, on heavy hex bolts, slightly taller. A 3/4 inch heavy hex bolt takes a 1-1/4 inch spanner where a standard hex bolt takes 1-1/8 inch. The larger head gives a bigger bearing face against the joint and more metal for the spanner to grip, which is why flanged joints and structural steel are bolted with heavy hex bolts and heavy hex nuts. Thread, diameter and length are the same as a standard hex bolt.

All three have the same width across flats. The heavy hex bolt (ASME B18.2.1) has a plain underhead, a slightly taller head and the 2D + 1/4 inch thread length; it is the general-purpose and flange bolt, normally in A307 Grade B or A193 B7. The heavy hex screw (ASME B18.2.1) has a washer face under the head, the cap-screw head height and closer tolerances, for machined assemblies. The heavy hex structural bolt (ASME B18.2.6, ASTM F3125 A325 or A490) has the cap-screw head height and a much shorter thread so that the threads stay out of the shear plane of a structural connection; it is installed with an A563 DH heavy hex nut and an F436 washer.

Strength and what you may do to them. ASTM F3125 Grade A325 is 120 ksi (830 MPa) minimum tensile, 25 to 34 HRC, in medium carbon or alloy steel; Grade A490 is 150 to 173 ksi (1040 to 1190 MPa), 33 to 38 HRC, in alloy steel. For a 3/4 inch bolt the minimum pretension is 28 kips for A325 and 35 kips for A490. A325 may be hot-dip or mechanically galvanised, and plain A325 bolts may be reused with the engineer's approval; A490 must not be galvanised and must never be reused, because the higher hardness makes it susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.

A307, A193 B7 and A325 heavy hex bolts can be hot-dip galvanised to ASTM F2329 or mechanically galvanised to ASTM B695 Class 55. Galvanised A325 bolts must be supplied as an assembly with a lubricated, overtapped A563 DH nut and tested for rotational capacity by the manufacturer. A490 and A354 BD must not be hot-dip galvanised; use zinc flake or leave them plain. Metric class 10.9 follows ISO 10684 with controlled pickling and baking; 12.9 is not galvanised.

A heavy hex nut with the same width across flats as the bolt head and a thickness of about one bolt diameter: ASTM A563 Grade DH (or A194 2H) for A325 and A490 structural bolts, A563 Grade A or B for A307, A194 2H for A193 B7, A194 8 or 8M for B8 or B8M, and A194 7 for A320 L7. Structural assemblies use hardened F436 washers under the turned element; galvanised assemblies use an overtapped, lubricated DH nut. Exotic Alloy supplies heavy hex bolts as matched bolt, nut and washer assemblies.

So that the threads can be kept out of the shear plane. ASME B18.2.6 gives a reference thread length of 1.00 inch for a 1/2 inch bolt rising to 2.25 inch for 1-1/2 inch, roughly one diameter plus a few threads, compared with 2D + 1/4 inch on a heavy hex bolt. A connection designed with threads excluded from the shear plane (type X) can carry about 25 percent more shear per bolt than one with threads included (type N). The bolt length is then chosen from the grip, the washer and nut height plus the stick-out allowed by RCSC.

Snug-tight means the plies are in firm contact, reached with a few impacts of an impact wrench or the full effort of a worker with an ordinary spud wrench; it is enough for bearing-type connections not subject to fatigue or load reversal. Pretensioned means the bolt is tightened to at least 70 percent of its minimum tensile strength (28 kips for a 3/4 inch A325) by turn-of-nut, calibrated wrench, twist-off tension-control bolt or direct tension indicator; it is required for slip-critical joints, joints with load reversal or fatigue, and connections in bridges, cranes and towers. The RCSC Specification governs both.

Yes. The heavy hex pattern is forged in A193 B8 and B8M (304 / 316), A4-80, duplex 2205, super duplex 2507, Inconel 625 and 718, Monel 400 and K-500, Hastelloy C-276 and Incoloy 825, with matching heavy hex nuts in the same alloy or A194 8 / 8M. Sizes above 1-1/2 inch and short runs are CNC machined from certified bar; standard sizes in B7, B8 and B8M ship from stock and alloy bolts are made to order in 7 to 15 business days with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates.
