Overview

ISO 4762 Socket Cap Screws & ASME B18.3 Socket Head Bolts: Manufacturer & Stockist

A socket head bolt, properly a hexagon socket head cap screw, has a round head with a hexagon socket and is driven from above with a hex key. The head is about 1½ times the thread diameter across and as high as the diameter. It sinks into a counterbore and needs no room for a spanner, which is why it is the standard screw of machine tools, dies and moulds.

Exotic Alloy manufactures socket head cap screws in Mumbai, India, to ISO 4762 (the successor to DIN 912) and ASME B18.3. Alloy steel screws are cold headed with the socket formed in the die, then quenched and tempered to 12.9 or ASTM A574. Stainless and exotic alloy screws are headed or machined from certified bar. We stock and supply across India and export to Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Europe and the Americas.

Left: a socket head cap screw seated flush in a counterbore, tightened from above with a hex key. Right: a hex bolt needs spanner room around its head, so it cannot sit in a counterbore or close to a wall. Socket head: flush in a counterbore Hex head: needs spanner room hex key from above head below the surface tapped hole or clearance hole + nut spanner swing wall blocks the spanner EXOTIC ALLOY
Why designers choose socket heads. The key enters from above, so the head can sit in a counterbore below the surface, beside a wall or a shoulder, and screws can be packed closely in a pattern. A hex head needs room around it for the spanner to swing.

Our calculation, not a standard table. The counterbore must clear the maximum head diameter, including knurled heads; we add 0.5 mm and round up to 0.5 mm. For a flush head the depth must be at least k max. Clearance holes are ISO 273 medium series. Where your drawing standard gives preferred counterbore sizes, such as DIN 974-1, use those.

To scale: M12 socket head with 18 mm head, 12 mm high, 10 mm key, against 1/2 inch socket head with 19.05 mm head, 12.7 mm high, 9.53 mm (3/8 inch) key M12, ISO 4762 ½″, ASME B18.3 dₖ 18 · key 10 · k 12 A 0.750″ · key ⅜″ · H 0.500″ same idea, different numbers: metric and inch keys and counterbores do not interchange
Drawn to the same scale. The ½″ head is 1.05 mm larger across and 0.7 mm taller than M12, and takes a 9.53 mm key against 10 mm. A metric key slips in an inch socket and rounds it.

Manufacturing

How Our Socket Head Bolts Are Made

A socket cap screw is a high-strength part with a hole in its head. Most of the manufacturing effort goes into keeping the head, the socket and the fillet sound.

1

Spheroidized alloy wire

Cr-Mo wire rod annealed so that it can be cold headed. It is received by heat with mill certificates and checked for surface seams, which would open under the heading punch.

2

Cold heading with the socket

A multi-station header upsets the head and backward-extrudes the hex socket in the same blows. This keeps grain flow continuous around the socket and the underhead fillet. Exotic alloys and large sizes are hot forged or machined.

3

Knurling & trimming

Head knurled on request, top edge chamfered and the point formed. Lengths are cut and the blank is checked for head height and concentricity.

4

Thread rolling

Threads rolled to 6g (5g6g / 4g6g on request) or UNRC / UNRF class 3A with the rounded root that the inch standards require. They are rolled before or after heat treatment as the specification demands.

Quench & temper

Hardened and tempered in protective-atmosphere furnaces to 39 to 44 HRC for 12.9, 32 to 39 HRC for 10.9, and ASTM A574 minimums. Carbon potential is controlled to avoid decarburization at the thread and socket.

6

Finishing

Black oxide and oil for alloy screws, zinc flake or baked plating on request, and passivation for stainless.

7

Testing & gauging

Hardness, wedge or axial tensile and proof load per lot. Socket gauged go / no-go to ISO 23429, thread gauged, and decarburization checked on 12.9.

Grain flow in a socket head: cold headed head with grain lines following the head, socket and fillet, against a head machined from bar where the grain lines are cut Cold headed Machined from bar grain follows head, socket and fillet grain cut at the head and fillet

Why the head is headed, not cut

A cap screw that fails in service usually fails at the first engaged thread or at the underhead fillet. Cold heading pushes the metal into the head and around the socket, so the grain lines follow the outline of the part. A head turned from large bar cuts through the grain right at the fillet and leaves the corner weaker in fatigue.

That is why standard socket cap screws are cold headed. Sizes or alloys that cannot be headed are hot forged, and we machine from bar only where neither is possible. The method is stated on the certificate.

Finishes

Socket Head Bolt Finishes

The finish on a 12.9 screw is chosen as much for its effect on the steel as for corrosion. See also our coated fasteners page.

12.9 and hydrogen embrittlement. At 39 to 44 HRC, a 12.9 socket cap screw that picks up hydrogen during acid cleaning or electroplating can crack under load hours or days after assembly. We avoid acid pickling on 12.9, bake within hours of any electroplating, and recommend black oxide or zinc flake instead.

FAQ

Socket Head Bolt Questions, Answered

A socket head bolt, properly a hexagon socket head cap screw, has a cylindrical head with a hexagon socket and is tightened with a hex (Allen) key from above. It is made to ISO 4762 (formerly DIN 912) in metric sizes and ASME B18.3 in inch sizes. The head is about one and a half times the thread diameter across and as high as the thread diameter, so it fits in a counterbore and needs no spanner clearance around it.

DIN 912 has been replaced by DIN EN ISO 4762. The head diameter, head height, socket size and thread used in trade match for the common sizes, so buyers still order by either number. For new drawings we recommend ISO 4762, which is the current standard and covers M1.6 to M64 in product grade A.

The socket head cap screw was developed as a compact, high-strength fastener for machine tools, dies and moulds, so most are made in quenched and tempered alloy steel: property class 12.9 (1220 MPa minimum tensile) in metric and ASTM A574 (180 ksi up to 1/2 inch, 170 ksi from 5/8 inch) in inch sizes. Lower classes 8.8 and 10.9 and stainless A2 and A4 are made where corrosion or cost matters more than strength.

Both have a head about 1.5 times the diameter across and as high as the diameter, but the sizes and keys differ. An M12 screw has an 18 mm head, 12 mm high, with a 10 mm key; a 1/2 inch screw has a 0.750 inch head, 0.500 inch high, with a 3/8 inch key. Metric and inch screws, keys and counterbores are not interchangeable.

The counterbore must be larger than the maximum head diameter, including knurled heads, and at least as deep as the maximum head height if the head is to sit flush. For an M10 screw the head is up to 16.27 mm across (knurled) and 10 mm high, so the counterbore should be at least 17 mm across and 10 to 10.5 mm deep, over an 11 mm clearance hole (ISO 273 medium). The table on this page gives the minimums for M3 to M36.

It depends on friction. Calculated by the VDI 2230 method at 90 percent of minimum yield and a friction coefficient of 0.12 (oiled black oxide), an M12 12.9 screw needs about 136 N m for about 69 kN preload and an M16 about 336 N m for about 130 kN. Plated, waxed or dry screws need different values; use the calculator on this page and confirm for your joint.

Metric stainless socket cap screws are made to ISO 3506-1 in A2 (304) and A4 (316): ISO 4762 lists classes A2-70 and A4-70 up to M24 and A2-50 and A4-50 above M24, and A4-80 is available for higher strength. Inch stainless screws are made to ASTM F837, where Group 1 and Group 2 cold worked condition CW1 has a 102 ksi minimum full-size tensile strength. Use anti-seize with stainless to prevent galling.

Electroplating class 12.9 screws, which are 39 to 44 HRC, risks hydrogen embrittlement, so it is only done with prompt baking and is often avoided altogether. Black oxide with oil is the traditional finish for alloy socket cap screws; zinc flake coatings give real corrosion protection without hydrogen risk.
