Overview

ASTM F1554 Grade 36 J Anchor Bolts & Stainless J Hook Bolts: Manufacturer & Supplier

A J bolt is a round steel rod with a thread at one end and a J-shaped hook at the other. Cast into concrete, the hook keeps the rod from pulling out, and a nut on the projecting thread holds down a sill plate, a column base or a machine.

Exotic Alloy manufactures J bolts in Mumbai, India. Anchor bolts are made to ASTM F1554 from certified bar: threads are rolled or cut, the hook is bent on a former, and the bolts are hot-dip galvanized after bending when required. Each grade is marked with its F1554 colour. We supply contractors and distributors in India, and export to Canada, the USA, the Gulf and Africa.

304 · 316 · 2205

For marine structures, water treatment plants and food factories, where zinc is not acceptable.

How anchors resist tension: a J bolt and an L bolt bear on the concrete only through the hook, which can straighten and slip under high load, while a headed anchor rod bears on its head and engages a full cone of concrete J bolt L bolt Headed anchor rod hook bears, can open up bend bears, can straighten head bears, full concrete cone EXOTIC ALLOY
Where the load goes. A J or L bolt holds only by bearing of the hook. ACI 318 limits that pullout strength, and under high tension the hook can open and slip. A headed anchor rod, or a rod with a nut and plate at the bottom, bears on a flat head and engages a full cone of concrete. That is why headed anchors are preferred for heavily loaded column bases.

Pullout

J Bolt Pullout Strength Calculator (ACI 318)

Compare the concrete pullout of the hook with the tensile strength of the rod. For a J or L bolt, ACI 318 gives Np = 0.9 f′c eh da, with 3 da ≤ eh ≤ 4.5 da. The steel strength is Nsa = Ase,N futa.

Hooked bolt check

Nominal strengths only. Strength reduction factors, concrete breakout, side-face and edge effects, and load combinations are not included, so a qualified engineer must complete the anchor design.

Setting J Bolts in Concrete

J bolts are cast in when the concrete is placed, so they must be set accurately in a template before the pour.

Plan of a sill plate on a foundation with J bolts: a bolt within 12 inches of each end and of each side of a plate splice, and bolts no more than 6 feet apart ≤ 12″ ≤ 6 ft ≤ 12″ each side ≤ 6 ft ≤ 12″ plate splice wall corner / plate end EXOTIC ALLOY
Sill-plate anchorage under IRC R403.1.6 (2018). Use ½″ or larger bolts embedded at least 7″ in concrete or grouted masonry, no more than 6 ft apart, with a bolt within 12″ of every wall corner and plate splice, and washers under the nuts. Local amendments and engineered designs can be stricter.

Do

  • Hold bolts in a template so position and projection are right before the pour
  • Point the hook into the body of the footing, away from the edge
  • Protect the thread with tape or a sleeve during concreting
  • Vibrate the concrete around the hook so it is fully bedded

Don't

  • Push J bolts into concrete after it is placed (“wet setting”) unless your code and engineer allow it
  • Bend or straighten a cast-in bolt to correct position, especially Grade 105
  • Weld to Grade 36, 55 or 105 rods unless they are Grade 55 S1 weldable
  • Rely on a J bolt for high tension without an engineer's check

FAQ

J Bolt Questions, Answered

A J bolt is a steel rod threaded at one end and bent into a J at the other. Cast into concrete, the hook anchors the bolt so that a nut on the threaded end can hold down a sill plate, column base or equipment. In the US, structural J anchor bolts are made to ASTM F1554. Smaller J bolts with a nut are also used as hooks for pipes, roofing sheets and cables.

A J bolt ends in a curved hook and an L bolt in a 90 degree bend; ACI 318 treats both as hooked bolts with the same pullout rule. A headed anchor bolt has a forged head or a nut and plate at the bottom, which bears directly on the concrete. Hooks can straighten under high tension, so headed anchors are usually chosen for heavily loaded column bases, while J bolts suit sill plates and light equipment.

Grade 36 (36 ksi yield, 58 to 80 ksi tensile, blue end) is the usual choice for J bolts and is easy to bend. Grade 55 (55 ksi yield, 75 to 95 ksi tensile, yellow) gives more strength, and Grade 55 with supplement S1 can be welded. Grade 105 (105 ksi yield, 125 to 150 ksi tensile, red) is a quenched and tempered alloy grade for high loads, up to 3 inch diameter.

Under IRC R403.1.6 (2018 edition), sill plates are anchored with bolts at least 1/2 inch in diameter, embedded at least 7 inches into concrete or grouted masonry, spaced no more than 6 feet apart, with a bolt within 12 inches of each wall corner and plate splice, and fitted with washers. Local amendments and engineered designs may require more.

For bent anchor bolts, length is measured from the inside of the bend to the end of the thread. ASTM F1554 tolerances are plus or minus 1/2 inch on length up to 24 inches long and 1 inch over, plus or minus 10 percent or 1/2 inch on the hook, plus or minus 5 degrees on the bend angle, and plus 1 inch, minus 0 on thread length.

ACI 318 limits the pullout strength of a hooked bolt to Np = 0.9 f'c eh da, where eh is the hook length from the inner face of the shank, counted between 3 and 4.5 bolt diameters. A 3/4 inch J bolt with a 3 inch hook in 3,000 psi cracked concrete has a nominal pullout strength of about 6,075 lb, far below the 19,400 lb nominal steel strength of a Grade 36 rod. Concrete breakout, edge distance and strength reduction factors must also be checked.

Galvanize them where the projecting end is exposed to weather, or where treated lumber or coastal air is involved. We hot-dip galvanize to ASTM A153 Class C or F2329 after bending and supply over-tapped ASTM A563 nuts to suit the zinc thickness. Grade 105 rods need care in galvanizing and are checked case by case.

No. ASTM F1554 covers carbon, carbon-boron, alloy and high-strength low-alloy steel anchor rods only. Stainless J bolts are made from 304 or 316 bar, with properties certified to the bar specification or to an agreed stainless fastener specification such as ASTM F593. They are used for food plants, marine work and where galvanizing is not acceptable.
