Overview

A307 Square Head Machine Bolts & ASME B18.2.1 Hex Machine Bolts: Manufacturer & Exporter

A machine bolt is a square or hex head bolt that passes through clearance holes in the parts and is tightened with a nut. The head is held while the nut is turned. That is the opposite of a cap screw, which is turned by its head into a tapped hole.

ASME B18.2.1 calls these products square bolts and hex bolts; the trade calls both machine bolts. Exotic Alloy manufactures them in Mumbai, India, with a plain underhead and rolled threads, and supplies each bolt with its square or hex nut to ASME B18.2.2. We also make the zinc-coated square head machine bolts used on wood poles and crossarms, to IEEE C135.1. We supply India and export to Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Africa and the Americas.

Best Price & Custom Sizes in A307, Galvanized & Stainless

Drawn to scale for a ½″ square bolt (ASME B18.2.1: F ¾″, head height about 21⁄64″; nut thickness 7⁄16″). The width across corners G of a square head is √2 × F, about 41 % more than F, against 15 % for a hexagon. That larger corner-to-corner span is why a square head bears and grips so well in timber.

Types

Types of Machine Bolts We Manufacture

The head shape, the point and the thread length change with the job; the principle stays the same: through the parts, nut on the far side.

Square Head Machine Bolts

ASME B18.2.1 square bolts · ¼″ – 1½″ · A307

The original bolt form. The square head gives a large bearing face and grips timber, so it does not turn while the nut is tightened. Used for wood construction, docks, rail, farm equipment and restoration work, often with a square nut.

Hex Machine Bolts

ASME B18.2.1 hex bolts · ¼″ – 4″ · A307, SAE J429, A449

The everyday through-bolt for steel, equipment and structures. It has a plain underhead with no washer face and wider tolerances than a hex cap screw, and is held at the head while the nut is turned.

Pole-Line Machine Bolts (Crossarm / Through Bolts)

IEEE C135.1 · galvanized ASTM A153 · cone point

Long square head bolts with one square nut and a cone point. They go through wood poles to hold crossarms, insulator brackets and hardware. They are zinc coated with the nut tapped after galvanizing, to the tensile strengths in IEEE C135.1.

Long-Thread & Fully Threaded Machine Bolts

Thread to order · up to full length

Timber and pole bolts are often threaded 4″ to 8″ or fully, so one bolt length suits several grip thicknesses as the wood shrinks or the layers vary.

Metric Machine Bolts

ISO 4016 (DIN 601) · DIN 478 / 479 / 480 square head

Metric product grade C hex bolts in classes 4.6 to 8.8 are the metric equivalent of the A307 hex machine bolt. Square head bolts come with a collar (DIN 478), a short dog point (DIN 479) or both (DIN 480).

Stainless & Bronze Machine Bolts

ASTM F593 304 / 316 · silicon bronze C65500

For docks, boats, coastal timber, food plants and water treatment, where galvanizing would not last. Supplied with matching F594 stainless or bronze nuts.

Section through a wood pole and crossarm held by a square head machine bolt: square washer under the head, bolt through both timbers, square washer and square nut on the far side, with thread projecting beyond the nut Through-bolting a crossarm to a wood pole crossarm wood pole square head square washer square nut washer, then 2 to 3 threads past the nut grip EXOTIC ALLOY
Why the head is square and the thread is long. The square head and its washer bear on a wide area of wood and do not turn, so the lineman can tighten the nut from one side. A long thread lets one bolt length cover a range of pole diameters, and lets the nut be re-tightened as the wood dries and shrinks.

Minimum tensile strengths from IEEE C135.1, Table 10, as cited in utility material specifications. The equivalent stress column is our calculation on the UNC stress area: every size works out at about 55 ksi. Lengths, thread lengths and head and nut sizes follow C135.1 and the utility's material specification. Utilities typically require rolled threads, and nuts are tapped oversize after zinc coating.

F593G / F593H

Molybdenum-bearing grade for docks, boats, coastal and chloride service.

Silicon bronze
C65500 · C65100

The traditional boat-building and marine timber bolt. It does not rust or stain oak, and is easy to peen over.

Naval brass
C46400

For fresh and salt water fittings where a strong, dezincification-resistant brass is acceptable.

Manufacturing

How Our Machine Bolts Are Made

Machine bolts are made in volume, so the process is about consistency: the same head, thread and coating on every piece of a lot.

1

Wire rod & bar

Low and medium carbon steel wire rod or bar received by heat with mill certificates; stainless and bronze PMI-checked.

2

Heading

Square and hex heads cold headed on multi-blow headers up to about ¾″. Larger diameters and long pole bolts are hot forged, with a plain bearing face and no washer face.

3

Trimming & pointing

Hex heads trimmed; square heads forged to size. Ends pointed flat, chamfered or cone pointed for pole-line bolts that are driven into bored holes.

4

Thread rolling

UNC threads rolled to class 2A, to the standard 2D + ¼″ length or to the longer thread a pole or timber bolt needs. Rolling keeps the grain unbroken at the root.

5

Heat treatment

None for A307 and Grade 2. Quench and temper for SAE Grade 5 / 8, A449 and B7. Stainless is cold worked to the F593 condition.

6

Galvanizing

Bolts hot-dip galvanized and spun to clear the threads; nuts galvanized as blanks and tapped oversize afterwards, so the zinc on both still lets them assemble.

7

Testing & packing

Tensile and hardness tests per lot, thread and dimension checks, coating thickness. Nuts assembled or packed with the bolts, then labelled by size, length and quantity.

Galvanized thread fit: the zinc layer on the bolt thread is accommodated by tapping the nut thread oversize after galvanizing Galvanized bolt thread in an overtapped nut nut, tapped oversize after galvanizing bolt thread with zinc layer (grey)

Why galvanized bolts and nuts come as a set

Hot-dip galvanizing adds a zinc layer to the thread flanks of the bolt. A standard nut will not run onto it. So nuts are galvanized as blanks and tapped oversize afterwards, which leaves room for the zinc on the bolt while the nut's own threads stay bare. They are protected by the zinc on the bolt.

That is also why galvanized and plain parts must not be mixed. An overtapped nut on a plain bolt is a loose fit and loses strength. We ship galvanized machine bolts with their own nuts, assembled or in the same pack.

Finishes

Machine Bolt Finishes

Most machine bolts work outdoors in timber and steel, so the finish usually decides their life. See also our coated fasteners page.

FinishSpecificationUseNotes for machine bolts
Plain (self colour)As manufactured, lightly oiledIndoor equipment, painted after assemblyLowest cost; rusts outdoors
Hot-dip galvanizedASTM A153 / ASTM F2329Poles, timber, fencing, outdoor steelThe standard outdoor finish and the one IEEE C135.1 calls for; nuts tapped oversize after galvanizing
Mechanically galvanizedASTM B695Where a smoother, more even thread coat is wantedNo molten zinc; thickness chosen by class
Zinc electroplateASTM F1941 / B633Indoor and sheltered equipmentThin and bright; not for outdoor timber
Passivated stainlessASTM A967Marine, food, water treatmentAnti-seize recommended to stop galling between stainless bolt and nut
Bright bronzeAs machinedBoats and marine timberNeeds no coating; weathers to a dark brown
Treated timber eats plain and thin-zinc bolts. Modern copper-based wood preservatives are far more corrosive to steel than the old treatments. In pressure-treated timber, use hot-dip galvanized machine bolts with the coating to ASTM A153, or 304 / 316 stainless, never zinc-plated bolts.

FAQ

Machine Bolt Questions, Answered

A machine bolt is a square or hex head bolt that is passed through clearance holes in the parts and tightened with a nut. In ASME B18.2.1 the hex version is called a hex bolt and the square version a square bolt; the trade name machine bolt covers both. They have a plain bearing surface under the head, no washer face, and wider tolerances than hex cap screws, and are usually made in ASTM A307 carbon steel.

Both are covered by ASME B18.2.1 and look alike, but a hex cap screw has a washer face under the head, a chamfered point and closer tolerances on the body and head, so it can be turned by its head into a tapped hole. A machine bolt (hex bolt) has a plain underhead and wider tolerances and is meant to be held by its head while the nut is turned. Hex bolts and hex cap screws also have different head heights for most sizes.

No. Machine screws are small screws, generally from No. 0 to 3/4 inch, with slotted or recessed pan, flat, round or fillister heads, covered by ASME B18.6.3. Machine bolts are larger square or hex head bolts covered by ASME B18.2.1 and tightened with a spanner and a nut.

A square head has a larger bearing area than a hex head of the same across-flats size and bites into the wood of a pole or crossarm so it does not turn while the nut is tightened from the other side. IEEE C135.1 covers zinc-coated square head machine bolts and nuts for overhead line construction, hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A153, with minimum tensile strengths such as 7,800 lbf for 1/2 inch and 18,350 lbf for 3/4 inch.

ASTM A307 Grade A (60 ksi minimum tensile) is the standard grade for general through-bolting in timber, light steel and equipment. A307 Grade B (60 to 100 ksi) is for flanged joints with cast-iron flanges. Use SAE J429 Grade 5 or ASTM A449 (120 ksi) when more strength is needed, and ASTM F593 304 or 316 stainless steel for marine, food and corrosive service.

Add the grip (the total thickness of the parts), any washers, the nut thickness (about 7/8 of the diameter for ASME B18.2.2 square and hex nuts) and a few threads of projection beyond the nut, then round up to the next stock length. Also check that the thread starts inside the grip, so that the nut tightens on the thread rather than running out onto the plain shank. The calculator on this page does both.

Yes. A307 and IEEE C135.1 machine bolts are routinely hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A153 or F2329. The zinc adds thickness to the threads, so the matching nuts are tapped oversize after galvanizing and the bolt and nut are supplied together. Galvanized nuts should not be mixed with plain bolts or the other way round.

Yes. Metric hex machine bolts are made to ISO 4016 (product grade C) in property classes 4.6 to 8.8, and metric square head bolts to DIN 478, 479 or 480. Inch stainless machine bolts are made to ASTM F593 in 304 (Group 1) and 316 (Group 2), and we also produce silicon bronze machine bolts for marine timber work.
