Key Specifications: ASTM B166 / B167 / B168 / ASME SB-166

Machinability: Inconel 600 machines similarly to austenitic stainless steels. Use low speeds, high feeds, flood cooling, and sharp carbide tooling to minimize work hardening. Electrochemical grinding (ECG) is preferred for tight-tolerance threaded features.

Welding: Easily welded by GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW with Inconel 82 (filler) or Inconel 182 (electrode). No post-weld heat treatment required for most corrosion service. Keep interpass temperature below 100°C.

Forging: Hot forge between 927–1177°C (1700–2150°F). Material can also be cold formed in the annealed condition with intermediate anneals at 1010–1066°C (1850–1950°F).

Heat Treatment: Anneal at 1010–1066°C (1850–1950°F), followed by rapid water quench or air cool. No age-hardening treatment exists for Alloy 600.

Alloy 600 offers outstanding resistance to dry chlorine and HCl gases at high temperatures, strongly alkaline solutions, and sulfur-containing atmospheres. High nickel content (72% min) provides immunity to chloride-induced SCC.

Key Characteristics

  • Outstanding high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
  • Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and intergranular attack.
  • High fatigue and thermal-fatigue strength in cyclic temperature service.
  • Superb resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking.
  • Maintains structural integrity from cryogenic to extreme high-temperature service.

Typical Applications

  • Aerospace engineering: jet engine turbine blades, discs, and casings.
  • Chemical processing: reactor vessels, pressure containment bolting.
  • Marine and subsea: offshore wellhead, Christmas tree, HPHT connectors.
  • Nuclear power: reactor core hardware, primary coolant system fasteners.
  • Power generation: steam turbine bolting, ultra-supercritical boiler components.
