Overview

DIN 315 Wing Nuts: Manufacturer & Distributor

A wing nut is the fastener you can work with bare hands. Two wings give finger and thumb a grip, so covers, clamps and fixtures can be opened and closed again and again without a tool.

Exotic Alloy manufactures and distributes wing nuts from Mumbai, India, for machine and fixture builders, food and process equipment makers, furniture and display makers, and fastener distributors. We supply across India and to Rwanda, East Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia.

Three standards

DIN 315 has rounded wings and is the common metric wing nut, often called the German type. DIN 314 has edged, square-topped wings. Inch wing nuts are made to ASME B18.6.9, where Type A comes in light, regular and heavy series. For wing screws see butterfly screws; for spanner-tightened nuts hex nuts.

FAQ

Wing Nut Questions, Answered

A nut with two wings that is turned by finger and thumb, so it can be put on and taken off quickly without a tool. The common metric type is DIN 315 with rounded wings, M4 to M24; DIN 314 has edged wings; inch wing nuts are made to ASME B18.6.9.

The wing shape. DIN 315 wings are rounded, DIN 314 wings are edged (square topped). Their spans and heights are close but not the same: at M10, DIN 315 spans up to 51 mm and stands up to 25 mm high, DIN 314 up to 50 mm and 24 mm. DIN 314 covers M4 to M12.

Wing span 48 to 51 mm, height 23 to 25 mm, boss 17 to 20 mm across at the bearing face and 8 to 12 mm high, with an M10 x 1.5 thread through the boss.

Series of ASME B18.6.9 Type A wing nuts. The same thread comes with larger wings in the heavier series: a 1/4-20 light wing nut spreads up to 1.10 in, regular 1.25 in and heavy 1.44 in.

Wing nuts are made to be tightened by hand, for covers, clamps, guards and fixtures that are opened often. Where a joint needs a set preload, use a hex nut tightened with a spanner.

DIN 315 allows malleable cast iron, steel (forged or cold formed), brass and austenitic stainless steel. Stainless A2 and A4 are the usual choice outdoors and in food plants; the nut in the photo is stainless.

At least the wing span to turn, plus room for the fingers: 51 mm span and 25 mm height for an M10 DIN 315 nut, 65 mm and 33.5 mm for M12. The finder below checks your space.

At least the clamped thickness plus the boss height m, so the thread runs through the whole boss: for M10 DIN 315, the clamped parts plus 12 mm.
