Overview

DIN 928 Square Weld Nuts: Manufacturer & Distributor

A square weld nut turns a hole in thin sheet into a strong, permanent thread. Four projections, one at each corner, carry the welding current and fuse the nut to the sheet in one shot.

Exotic Alloy manufactures and distributes square weld nuts from Mumbai, India, for vehicle and trailer builders, enclosure and appliance makers, agricultural and construction machinery fabricators, and fastener distributors. We supply across India and to Ethiopia, East Africa, the Gulf and South-East Asia.

How it is built

One face carries the four corner projections and goes against the sheet; the opposite face has a round collar. The sheet hole is small, at most 1.05 times the thread diameter. For a nut with a locating pilot see hex weld nuts (DIN 929); for plain square nuts square nuts.

DIN 928 square

  • Four projections, one per corner.
  • Small sheet hole, at most 1.05 d.
  • Round collar on the free face; it does not enter the hole.

DIN 929 hex

  • Three projections on alternate corners.
  • A pilot that sits in a larger hole and locates the nut.
  • Same spanner from M8 up; wider at M4 to M6. See hex weld nuts.

Note: some sellers describe the DIN 928 collar as a pilot that guides the nut into the hole. In the DIN 928 drawings it is on the face away from the sheet and wider than the sheet hole.

Bolting

Bolt Grade and Bolt Length for Square Weld Nuts

Section through an M10 joint: a 10 mm part bolted to a 2 mm sheet with a welded DIN 928 nut; the projections are welded to the sheet, the collar faces away, the sheet hole is at most 10.5 mm and the bolt is at least 20 mm long Installed M10: sheet hole, welded nut and bolt length (section) part sheet DIN 928 nut, welded collar faces away from the sheet part 10 sheet 2 nut m 8 L ≥ 20 sheet hole ≤ 10.5 (d2) Example M10: 10 mm part + 2 mm sheet + 8 mm nut = 20 mm under the head. Collar drawn at its minimum height. EXOTIC ALLOY
The bolt comes from the other side of the sheet. It passes through the part, the sheet hole and the full height of the welded nut.
  • Shortest bolt = part + sheet + nut height m. Choose the next standard length; we suggest about two pitches more so the chamfered end clears the nut.
  • Bolt grade: below property class 8.8 (Bossard). For 8.8 to 10.9 use flanged weld nuts to ISO 21670.
  • Welding current, force and time depend on the machine and sheet: set them with trial welds.

FAQ

Square Weld Nut Questions, Answered

A square nut made to be projection welded onto sheet metal, to DIN 928 from M4 to M16. One face carries four weld projections, one on each corner, that melt and fuse to the sheet; the opposite face has a round collar. A bolt can then be fitted from the other side of the sheet without holding a nut.

DIN 928 gives the sheet hole d2 as at most 1.05 times the thread diameter: 6.3 mm for M6, 8.4 mm for M8, 10.5 mm for M10, 12.6 mm for M12 and 16.8 mm for M16. Some catalogues list larger holes, up to 2.1 mm larger; we follow the DIN value.

M4 0.75 to 1.5 mm, M6 0.88 to 2.5 mm, M8 1 to 3 mm, M10 1.25 to 4 mm, M12 1.5 to 5 mm, and M14 and M16 2 to 6 mm. These are the same ranges as for DIN 929 hexagon weld nuts of the same size.

Bolts below property class 8.8, as Bossard states for its DIN 928 nuts and DIN 929 states for hexagon weld nuts. For class 8.8 to 10.9 bolts use hexagon weld nuts with flange to ISO 21670.

A DIN 928 square weld nut has four corner projections and a sheet hole no bigger than 1.05 d; a DIN 929 hex weld nut has three projections and a pilot that sits in a larger hole (10.5 mm at M8 against 8.4 mm). From M8 up both take the same spanner; at M4 to M6 the hex nut is wider.

Not one that goes into the sheet. In the DIN 928 drawings the round collar sits on the face away from the sheet and is wider than the sheet hole (at least 15.6 mm at M10 against a 10.5 mm hole). Some sellers call it a pilot; for a nut that locates in its hole, use a DIN 929 hexagon weld nut.

Steel with a carbon content of at most 0.25 %, which welds well; other steels by agreement. We also supply them in stainless steel A2 for welding to stainless sheet.

At least the part plus the sheet plus the nut height m: for M10 holding a 10 mm part to a 2 mm sheet, 10 + 2 + 8 = 20 mm. We suggest about two pitches more so the chamfered end clears the nut.
