Overview

DIN 929 Projection Weld Nuts: Manufacturer & Distributor

A hex weld nut gives thin sheet a strong, permanent thread. It is welded on once, in a few moments, and from then on a bolt can be fitted from the other side with one hand and one spanner.

Exotic Alloy manufactures and distributes hex weld nuts from Mumbai, India, for vehicle and trailer builders, appliance and enclosure makers, furniture and machinery fabricators, and fastener distributors. We supply across India and to Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, Africa and South-East Asia.

How it is built

The weld face carries a round pilot that drops into a hole in the sheet and three small projections on alternate corners. In projection welding the current flows through the projections, which melt and fuse the nut to the sheet. For high-strength bolts there are flanged weld nuts to ISO 21670; for square weld nuts see square weld nuts, for ordinary nuts hex nuts.

The hole equals the pilot diameter. globalfastener and fasten.it give it an H13 tolerance, as shown; Bossard's data sheet calls for H11 (for example 12.50 to 12.61 mm at M10), which fits within H13 and centres the nut more closely. Sheet thickness range from fasten.it and Bossard.

How a Weld Nut Is Projection Welded

Projection welding a weld nut in three steps: place the nut with its pilot in the hole, press between electrodes and pass the current so the projections melt, then the nut sits welded on the sheet Projection welding, step by step (schematic, M10 proportions) 1 Place pilot in the hole electrodes press 2 Press + current projections melt 3 Welded nut face on the sheet Projection height drawn to scale before welding; the melt is schematic. Welding current, force and time come from the welding machine set-up. EXOTIC ALLOY
Three steps, one hit of current. The projections carry the current, melt and fuse the nut to the sheet.
  • Pilot: centres the nut in the hole, holds it while welding and keeps spatter out of the thread.
  • Projections: three, on alternate corners; they concentrate the current so the weld forms there and not in the thread.
  • Steel: DIN 929 calls for at most 0.25 % carbon, which welds well; other steels by agreement.
  • Welding current, force and time depend on the machine, sheet and coating: set them with trial welds.
Bolting

Bolt Grade and Bolt Length for Weld Nuts

A part bolted to a sheet with a welded DIN 929 M10 nut: the bolt reaches the top of the nut when its length equals the part plus the sheet plus the nut height Bolting to a welded nut: shortest bolt for full thread engagement part sheet DIN 929 nut, welded part 10 sheet 2 nut m 8 L = 20 Example M10: 10 mm part + 2 mm sheet + 8 mm nut = 20 mm under the head. Add a few pitches so the chamfered end clears the nut. EXOTIC ALLOY
The bolt comes from the other side. It passes through the part and the sheet and engages the full height of the welded nut.
  • Shortest bolt = part + sheet + nut height m. Choose the next standard length; we suggest about two pitches more so the chamfered end clears the nut.
  • The finder below does the sum for your joint.
  • Bolt grade: DIN 929 weld nuts are for bolts below class 8.8 (fasten.it, Bossard). Some sellers quote 8.8; we follow the standard.
  • For class 8.8 to 10.9 bolts use flanged weld nuts to ISO 21670 (M5 to M16), made to order.

FAQ

Hex Weld Nut Questions, Answered

A hexagon nut made to be welded onto sheet metal, so that a bolt can later be fitted from the other side without holding a nut. A DIN 929 weld nut, M3 to M16, has a pilot ring that locates in the hole of the sheet and three projections on alternate corners that melt and fuse to the sheet in projection welding.

The hole is the pilot diameter: 8 mm for M6, 10.5 mm for M8, 12.5 mm for M10, 14.8 mm for M12 and 18.8 mm for M16. DIN 929 data gives an H13 tolerance, for example 12.50 to 12.77 mm at M10; Bossard's data sheet asks for the tighter H11.

M3 0.63 to 1.5 mm, M6 0.88 to 2.5 mm, M8 1 to 3 mm, M10 1.25 to 4 mm, M12 1.5 to 5 mm and M16 2 to 6 mm. At every size the pilot is shorter than the thinnest recommended sheet, so it does not stand proud on the far side.

DIN 929 weld nuts are for bolts below property class 8.8, as both fasten.it and Bossard state. Some sellers quote 8.8; for bolts of class 8.8 to 10.9 use hexagon weld nuts with flange to ISO 21670, which ISO rates for bolts up to class 10.9.

The pilot centres the nut in the hole, holds it in place while welding and keeps weld spatter out of the thread. The three projections concentrate the welding current, so they melt and fuse to the sheet while the rest of the nut stays cooler.

DIN 929 specifies steel with a carbon content of at most 0.25 %, which welds well; other steels by agreement. We also make DIN 929 weld nuts in stainless steel A2 and A4, as in the photo.

Besides the pilot and projections, the hexagon is wider than an ISO 4032 nut from M3 to M14 (17 mm against 16 mm at M10) and the same 24 mm at M16, and the nut is lower from M5 up (8 mm against 8.4 mm at M10).

At least the part thickness plus the sheet plus the nut height m, so the bolt reaches through the whole nut. For M10 on a 2 mm sheet holding a 10 mm part: 10 + 2 + 8 = 20 mm; we suggest a couple of pitches more so the chamfered end clears the nut.
