Overview

SAE J483 Low Crown Acorn Cap Nuts: Manufacturer & Exporter

An acorn nut closes off the end of a bolt. It covers the cut thread, keeps out dirt and water, and leaves a rounded, finished end that will not snag hands, clothing or cables.

Exotic Alloy manufactures and exports acorn nuts from Mumbai, India, for vehicle and trailer builders, marine and outdoor equipment makers, furniture and fit-out companies, and fastener distributors. We supply across India and export to Tunisia, North Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.

Inch acorn nuts

This page covers inch acorn nuts to SAE J483, which SAE writes for automotive and other ground vehicles and industrial equipment, where the nuts cover the ends of bolts, studs or screws. For metric domed cap nuts (DIN 1587, DIN 917) see hex cap nuts; for open nuts hex nuts.

Bolt length

Choosing the Bolt Length for an Acorn Nut

1/2-13 one-piece acorn nut on a 1/2 in plate: a bolt ending within the 0.50 in of full thread clamps; a bolt longer than that runs out of thread and stops before the nut clamps 1/2-13 on a 1/2 in plate: the bolt end must stay within the full thread U End within U: nut seats and clamps protrusion 0.5 in ≤ U 0.50 gap Too long: thread runs out, nut cannot seat protrusion 0.61 in > U 0.50 EXOTIC ALLOY
A closed nut cannot run past the bolt end. If the bolt reaches beyond the full thread, the nut stops before it clamps.
  • Longest bolt: clamped thickness + washers + U.
  • U is about one diameter, so the bolt end should stand no more than about 1 D proud of the work.
  • Allow for the bolt length tolerance and any washer under the nut.
  • The finder below checks your bolt.
Crowns & metric

High Crown, Low Crown and Metric Acorn Nuts

Low crown

The SAE J483 type tabulated on this page: a short, rounded crown on the hexagon. Dimensions confirmed by four sources.

High crown

Also SAE J483, with the same width across flats and a taller dome. We could not confirm its full dimensions from two independent sources, so we make high crown nuts to your drawing or sample.

Metric

Domed cap nuts to DIN 1587 (M4–M24) and low cap nuts to DIN 917, with full tables, are on our hex cap nuts page.

Nut & joint

Dimensions from the tables on this page. Longest bolt = clamp + washers + full thread U (one-piece). Thread engaged = bolt length − clamp, up to U. Two-piece nuts: thread depth varies by maker, so we confirm it on order. Bolt lengths are under the head.

FAQ

Acorn Nut Questions, Answered

A hexagon nut with a domed, closed top that covers the end of a bolt, stud or screw, for a neat finish and to protect the thread. Inch acorn nuts are made to SAE J483, which covers high and low crown types; metric domed cap nuts are DIN 1587.

For the SAE J483 one-piece low crown nut: 0.428 to 0.4375 in across flats (a 7/16 in spanner), 0.488 to 0.505 in across corners, 0.47 in overall height, 0.22 in hexagon height, drilled 0.34 in deep with 0.25 in of full thread.

The bolt end must stay within the full thread U, which is about one diameter: 0.25 in at 1/4 in, 0.50 in at 1/2 in. So the bolt length under the head should not exceed the clamped thickness plus washers plus U. On a 1/2 in plate, a 1/2-13 bolt up to 1 in long fits.

A one-piece acorn nut is made from a single blank, like the stainless nuts in the photo. A two-piece cap nut is a hex nut with a separate domed top joined to it; it is common in steel and much lower: 0.412 to 0.432 in high at 3/8 in against 0.62 in for the one-piece low crown nut.

Both are covered by SAE J483 with the same width across flats; the high crown nut has a taller dome. The tables on this page are for the low crown type, which two independent sources confirm; high crown nuts are made to order.

Stainless steel 304 or 304L is usual for one-piece nuts, and 316 for marine and coastal use; steel, plain or plated, for two-piece nuts; and brass for decorative and electrical work.

Yes, SAE J483 acorn nuts come in UNC and UNF threads, for example 1/4-20 and 1/4-28.

Yes. Metric domed cap nuts are made to DIN 1587, M4 to M24, and low cap nuts to DIN 917; both are on our hex cap nuts page with dimension tables.
