Nimonic

Material Specifications

Nimonic is a family of nickel-chromium superalloys originally developed for the Whittle jet engines of the 1940s and still the reference materials for high-temperature bolting and hot-section hardware. The range covers three approaches to strength. Alloys 75, 86 and 230 are solid-solution strengthened, offering the ductility, formability and weldability that fabricated assemblies need. Alloys 80A, 81, 90, 105 and 115 are gamma prime age hardened, trading fabricability for progressively higher creep strength — from 815°C in alloy 80A to about 1010°C in alloy 115. Alloys C263, PK33, PE11, PE16 and 901 deliberately restrict their aluminium and titanium content to keep welded joints ductile. Exotic Alloy manufactures the full Nimonic range of bolts, stud bolts, heavy hex nuts and custom CNC fasteners with traceability to BS HR, AMS, DIN and customer specifications.

Expertise

Manufacturing & Machining Nimonic

Machining difficulty across the Nimonic range tracks gamma prime content almost exactly. Alloy 75 cuts like a tough austenitic; alloy 115, with combined aluminium plus titanium approaching 10%, needs ceramic tooling, very low surface speeds and often grinding to finish. Exotic Alloy machines the age-hardenable grades in the solution-treated condition and rolls threads before the ageing cycle wherever the design allows, which produces a cold-worked, grain-flow-continuous thread with far better fatigue performance than a thread cut into aged material.

  • Thread Rolling Before Ageing: Consistent thread form from M6 to M100 and ¼"–4", rolled pre-age for maximum fatigue life.
  • Solution & Double-Age Cycles: Grade-specific treatments including the 8 h/1080°C + 16 h/700°C cycle for alloys 80A and 90, and the dedicated bolting cycle for alloy 105.
  • Hardness & PMI Testing: Positive material identification, hardness verification and dimensional inspection on every batch.
